Choosing the Right Urn
You have many options when it comes to choosing between military cremation urns and urns designed to honor others who have given or devoted their lives in service. Three of the most common styles of urns are metal cube urns, wooden chest urns, and traditional metal vase urns. All these options are decorated with familiar symbols, including bald eagles and American flags, U.S. military coats of arms and seals, or emblems that represent firefighters, police, or other law enforcement agencies.
When choosing any urn, make sure you know how much space you'll need inside. If you are keeping all the cremains in one urn, you'll want to pick an urn that has a volume in cubic inches that's at least equal to the deceased's healthy weight in pounds – in other words, if your loved one weighed 200 lbs. before he or she passed away, you'll need a military urn that has a volume of at least 200 cubic inches. It's best to select an urn that holds slightly more volume than you think you'll need. If you're only
keeping a portion of the cremains, you may want to consider a keepsake or sharing urn, which holds a smaller volume.
