Tried & True Sympathy Meal Recipes

Pastsa on a variety of plates.

Loss can take a toll on health and impact day-to-day functions, so our team gathered recipes of comforting sympathy meals to take to a grieving family. After a loss, it can be difficult to take care of everyday tasks so relieving the bereaved with one less thing to worry about can be a big help. Whether you purchase or prepare a sympathy meal, showing your condolences by providing food can support them better than sending flowers.

Meals for Grieving Families

Comfort foods don’t have to be high in calories, unhealthy, or difficult to make. There are plenty of nourishing and wholesome meals that you can gift. We chose recipes that were easy to transport, require little prep to heat up, can be frozen, and include multiple food groups. These are recipes our team has prepared for grieving friends and family to make their time a little less difficult.

Tip: Take into consideration food allergies, diets, aversions, and religious considerations when preparing food for others. If you’re unsure and don’t want to bother the bereaved, reach out to a close family member.

Preparing food for a grieving family or individual is a thoughtful gesture even if cooking isn’t your strongest quality.  Put together a sympathy gift basket with charcuterie options or staples that don’t need refrigeration or purchase prepared meals that can simply be put in the oven. If the bereaved live farther away from you, you can always opt for grocery delivery options, like Instacart, or have takeout delivered to them from a local restaurant. Don’t be discouraged if a meal is turned down - your act of kindness is noticed, but some people have a hard time accepting help, even during difficult times.
