Companion urns, which are also known as double urns, hold the cremains of two people. They are a very popular choice among families who wish to allow couples to remain together even after death. It is a beautiful way to honor the love and devotion of the pair.
Companion Urn Options
You can choose from a variety of different materials when selecting a companion urn from Perfect Memorials. Your options include, but may not be limited to, the following:

Companion urns can be made in the same way as individual sized urns, so while you may not have quite as many options, there is still a great deal of variation to choose from. The only difference between a standard and a double urn, in some cases, is the size of the container. In addition, you can find urns that are made specifically for two sets of ashes, and have separate containers for each that sit side by side.
Choosing the Right Size Urn
The companion urn size that you need is dependent on the combined healthy weight of each person going in to the urn. A good rule of thumb is that for each pound of weight before cremation, you'll need one cubic inch of volume in the urn. For companion urns where the cremains will be sharing one container, you'll want to combine the weights of both individuals. It's a good idea to look for an urn that includes a little extra space just in case it's needed.
Double urns are sometimes listed as extra large urns, and they typically hold between 380 and 440 cubic inches of cremains. This can vary by urn, however, and even larger sizes are available. If you're choosing a companion urn with separate sections, make sure that those sections are large enough for each individual.
Placing your Urn
Because they are often much larger than individual urns, companion urns will require more space. If you'll be displaying the urn in your home, make sure that the surface where you place it is big enough so that the urn won't be bumped or knocked over.
If you plan on burying the urn or placing it in a columbarium, a building made to house urns, you'll need to make sure that you have the space you need. Many cemeteries require that you use an urn vault or urn burial container; when choosing one, make sure that it's large enough for a double urn. Companion urn vaults, made to hold two sets of ashes, are also available. If the urn will be placed in a columbarium, ask if there are niches available for double urns. A typical niche is about 12" x 10" x 10", which may not be enough space for a very large urn.
